Go to the cinema, and you will be transported in the comfort of your theater chair to amazing global locations. There you can experience some of the world’s most wondrous sights and historical antiquities via remote movie locations shot in Jordan’s beautiful countryside.
Transformers, Revenge of the fallen.
The setting is the Matrix of Leadership, hidden in the “Egyptian” Tomb of the Primes. However, in reality, you are viewing rocky outcrops located in Jordan’s desert of Wadi Rum, and the “Egyptian” town is actually the Jordanian city of Salt. As the story progresses, a star formation points the movie’s characters toward Petra. The Monastery or Al Deir, located in Petra’s ‘Rose Red City,’ becomes the Tomb of the Primes. Even for very fit visitors, this sizable antiquity is a good hour’s uphill trek from The Treasury, the more recognizable Petra site. Climbing up deeper into The Monastery is well worth your minor fatigue, in order to experience such an exhilarating adventure.
The Hurt Locker
Giving a greater authenticity to THE HURT LOCKER, filming took place in Jordan because of its close proximity to Iraq, with some locations less than three miles from the Iraqi border. During the 45-day shoot, soaring temperatures, routinely topped 37 degrees Celsius with 100 percent humidity, creating a brutally realistic pressure cooker for both cast and crew.
The Martian
In 2015 over a period of eight days, the exterior scenes of The Martian with Matt Damon were shot in the magical Wadi Rum. This versatile geographical location has also been used for other space adventures, including MISSION TO MARS, and THE LAST DAYS ON MARS, and RED PLANET.
Prometheus
Director Ridley Scott certainly seems partial to Wadi Rum’s natural beauty. Maybe its harsh landscapes mesh well with his atmospheric, visual style. He shot PROMETHEUS there in 2012 and plans to use Wadi Rum for his new film, All the Money in the World.
Lawrence of Arabia
Wadi Rums’ endless red expanse comes alive with the totally authentic backdrop in each dreamlike scene of the epic Lawrence of Arabia. This harsh, but magical desert is totally worth a visit. Who can forget the vivid mixture of diverse vistas and colors? Black basalt, red sand, and famous rock formations, the Seven Pillars of Wisdom, named from the reference in Lawrence’s book.
Indiana Jones
As it turns out, the story location of The Grail in the ‘Canyon of the Crescent Moon’ looks similar to The Treasury, or Al Khazneh at Petra.
The Mummy Returns
In The Mummy Returns, Petra and a location called the Siq are visually reminiscent of the narrow rock fissure in the cliffs.
Via these outstanding films, you have unknowingly taken an amazing armchair journey to Jordan’s wondrous lands. Now isn’t it time to pack your own bags and experience this fabulous adventure for yourself?
